Power Ballad Monday

I was watching that new show on ABC, What About Brian. Boy, can I relate to that guy! Trouble with women? We're like, you know, the same. Well, except that I don't really know any hot girls, or like have friends, or have my own place, or have a job. Other than that, we're like the same, man!

That leads me to today's power ballad, "All Out of Love" by Air Supply. It was in that scene with Brian in his car, the stuck radio, the cute girl in the next car. I know it barely qualifies as a power ballad, but it is a ballad. And it does kinda make the heart swell with, what does Carl call it, "human feeling"?

Don't you kinda feel left out? I know I do. I want to fit in with the cool kids. All I have is a piece of crap mp3 player with a parallel port connector; it doesn't work with Windows XP so it's pretty much useless. I could always go retro with my Sony Walkman. Hmmm, I wonder how many cassette tapes it'll take to hold 30 GB of music? Can I even buy cassette tapes? Man, I should just buy an iPod Shuffle. It's only about $70 for the cheapest one. And I can even buy it within iTunes. Then maybe the cool kids will let me hang with them.

My favorite Portuguese Canadian is back on the scene with new music. Her single "No Hay Igual" is available now on iTunes. The rest of the album, Loose, should drop May 24. The sound is kinda different than her previous music - more hiphop, less folk. But don't be hatin' just 'cause it's different. Have you ever listened to certain music so much you got sick of it? Well, creative musicians can get sick of doing the same music endlessly too.

Update: Joey from the comments says Loose lets loose on June 20. And if Joey says so, it must be true.

When punkers come home after a hard day of rocking out at the office, I imagine they'd want to kick back and relax, share a cold beer with the wife, watch the kids playing in the backyard, and listen to a little music. Maybe Really Really Happy by The Muffs.

This pop-punk band's latest album isn't as energetic as their past albums but still packs a good pick-me-up. Although this album is more relaxed, it still sports a punk attitude, like in the song "Don't Pick On Me". And Kim Shattuck, the lead singer, lets loose with the occasional scream to keep you from forgetting.

Bif Naked has a new album out this month, Superbeautifulmonster. Well, new for us in the US; Canucks have had it since June. It spans quite a variety of sounds. "Everyday" and "Nothing Else Matters" are sit-in-my-bedroom-alone kinda ballads. After you're done moping, "Yeah, You" and "I Want" will get you in a punk mood. In "Funeral of a Good Grrl", she sounds like she's channelling Gwen Stefani. There's even a metal inspired number, "Ladybug Waltz".

Don't let narrow musical tastes turn you off this album; variety is good. And check out her previous compilation album, Essentially Naked.

Google Maps is the coolest! I don't know why it's so exciting looking at my house in a satellite photo, but it is. I've also been plugging in all my old addresses and checking out neighborhoods I haven't been to in years, decades even. Tracing old routes, remembering places, noticing changes; it just brings up such strong feelings of nostalgia. Even if it's just a satellite picture looking down from above.

When I was a teen, I remember reading a poem that was attributed to Mother Teresa. I read it, was inspired, and promptly forgot about it. Much later, I tried to look it up again because I couldn't quite recall how it went. Couldn't find it. Tried searching on and off for years, still couldn't find it. Then along came Google.

Anyway, I discovered it's not really a poem and Mother Teresa didn't write it. Check out The Paradoxical Commandments by Dr. Kent M. Keith. It has something to do with strength of character and doing good regardless of external circumstances. Read. It's inspiring and kinda depressing at the same time.

You can buy Dr. Keith's books on his site, but unless you want an autographed copy, you can get them cheaper on Amazon.

Her album wasn't released yet. So I waited. And waited. And waaaaaited. It's been a few years and still no album. <surfer>"Dude, bogus."</surfer> I don't know why her label is sitting on the album; I think she's getting screwed over.

I've been visiting Aimee's official sites for news, AimeeAllen.com and The Scott and Aimee Project, but no love. I've been searching the net but nothing. It's like she dropped of the face of the earth. If anybody knows something, anything, leave a comment, let us know.

My taste in music is kinda eclectic, I like all kinds. I listen to diffenent styles depending on my mood. Today is a punk day. I think I'll go with The Distillers. The earlier stuff is hard-core punk. Their latest album Coral Fang is a little more mainstream, but it still rocks. One of my favorites on Coral Fang is "The Hunger". It starts out slow, then ARHHH! On Sing Sing Death House my fave is "City of Angels" and on The Distillers it's "Oh Serena".

I've been feeling a little nostalgic for and listening to 80's music lately. Remember the name Jane Child? Even if you don't, you'll probably know a couple of her songs: Welcome To the Real World and Don't Wanna Fall In Love. Sass Jordan rocks so hard! I swear, I love her SO MUCH!! Umm... just give me a second to compose myself... there. I don't know why she isn't more well known outside Canada. She's beautiful (or rather, FREAKIN HOT). She can sing (IMHO better than her fellow Quebecois Celine Dion). She's a nice person (at least in my dreams). Come on, what's not to like? See and listen for yourself at SassJordan.com. If you like Janis Joplin, Melissa Etheridge, or Nikka Costa, you'll like... no, LOVE Sass Jordan. And if you can receive Canadian TV broadcasts, she's one of the judges on Canadian Idol.

I don't know if I can recommend just one or two of my favorite songs. You know how in some CD's there are only one or two good songs and the rest is filler? Not in Sass Jordan albums. They're all good. They all ROCK! Too bad iTunes only has two of Sass's albums. And if you buy from Amazon.com, you'll have to buy used or pay import prices.
